Lyfes Lyrics: Slow Dance

(I wrote this blog a few months ago and decided to re-post it here. Enjoy!)

[#ipodonrepeat Slow Dance – @misskeribaby]

Growing up I struggled with speaking my mind, more so verbally than written; not because I couldn’t articulate what I was thinking but mainly because my position in the family really didn’t give me the opportunity to speak. That’s at least how I felt. I blame feeling silenced on a lot of things but it’s of no importance now because I’ve found my own voice after years of being away from home and my people. So when I went off to college in the midwest I learned quite quickly a closed mouth don’t get fed.

My English, rhetoric, grammar, creative writing and technical writing courses are what really introduced me to the fundamentals of writing and, essentially, helped me build my foundation for my writing styles. My professors and classmates seemed to enjoy my works related to music and my Polynesian culture. But I always felt like I was short changing myself because although my athletic ability is what got my foot in the door to college, I found myself in the Music Building and music rooms in the basement of our dorms. I was expressing myself, but I wanted more outlets to get me to a place where I felt free. The winter of my freshman year is when I found my outlet and my freedom. It all happened… on a dance floor… while slow dancing. I wasn’t even dancing with anyone. Sounds funny, huh? I was out with a group of friends, floor mates and teammates on a weekend when we weren’t traveling.

We wanted a night of just letting our hair down and a night of not wearing sweatsuits and running shoes. As athletes, we never bothered with getting dressed up for class because often times practice was early in the morning and/or immediately after class. So there we are dancing as a group, in the middle of the floor, to a slow song and while everyone else was dancing in couples formation I was dancing in front of the mirror wall at the campus hot spot. Crazy? Not so much, at least I don’t think so. A couple of my friends tapped me on the shoulder and looked at me oddly, not because they thought i was weird but because they had never knew that side of me existed. Instead of shying away, i showed them the steps I just choreographed off the top of my head to the chorus since that’s always the repetitive part of the song. I told them “when the verses come on, do your own thing but convey in a dance what the song says lyrically and then come back together when the chorus starts”. There we were, group dancing to a slow song like we were in a Step Up movie scene. It wasn’t this particular song to which we danced (yes I remember the song I danced to that night. That’s beside the point), but Keri Hilson’s song Slow Dance takes me back to that memory. Why? Honestly, Slow Dance is one of those songs I enjoy dancing to at home by myself. Particular songs evoke an emotion within me that get my juices flowing physically, emotionally and mentally. I am truly in heaven when a song touches on all of my senses. Destiny’s Child, Isley Brothers, Usher, Keri Hilson, R. Kelly, Ginuwine are just a few artists that have a special way with lyrics that particularly get me up out of my seat and dancing. When an artist has the ability to lyrically play with words on the fine line of sensually and sexually, I’m the listener who’s imagination goes there. What can I say, I’m a visual person. Someday I’ll actually share a slow dance with someone. Ok… so I’ve slow danced with several people on the dance floor, but that’s just the dance floor. Ive been proposed to because of the way I dance. Dancing is dancing. I dance with meaning. I can’t help it. The slow dance I’m talking about is the slow dance of life. I want to share my dance with someone. Whenever that will be. Until then, its just me and some mirrors on a wall.

The next time you hear a slow song, what lyric speaks to you? What movement are you compelled to make when you hear a slow song?

“Slow Dance” performed by Keri Hilson

Come here baby

Sometimes I just wanna dance with you

Hold me like this, just rock with me

Put your arms around me boy

I got something to show you tonight

And you know I need your undivided attention baby

Ain’t no other girl that can rock your world like I

So rewind, make this moment last forever babe

It feels like your body is calling me

But I don’t, I don’t want to come on too strong

But something happens when we slow dance

I try to be lady like, I got you here tonight

But something happens when we slow dance

Talking with my fingertips, yeah, yeah

I got so much to say babe

Words just get in the way baby, the way baby

Let’s see can you read my hips

Read between the lines as we bump and grind

Just makes it better from behind

So one more time

So rewind, make this moment last forever babe

It feels like your body is calling me

I don’t want to come on too strong

But something happens when we slow dance

I try to be lady like, I got you here tonight

But something happens when we slow dance

Got you in my element

Time to represent who you with

The whole world’s staring at the both of us

And I’m giving you all my love

Got you in my element

Time to represent who you with

The whole world’s staring at the both of us

And I’m giving you all my love

This one’s for the dance floor, strictly for the dance floor

This one’s for the dance floor, strictly for the dance floor

This one’s for the dance floor, strictly for the dance floor

This one’s for the dance floor, strictly for the, yeah

I don’t want to come on too strong

But something happens when we slow dance

I try to be lady like but I got you here tonight

But something happens when we slow dance

I like that one

Just rock with me

Lia, you are one talented sista! thanks for reposting this one. We need to share more of our life experiences with each other. Especially for our younger Polynesian sisters growing up to show them positive women who are Polynesian so they can relate.

Several of these young men are now realizing that #trackandfield should’ve been a major part of their lives earlier on in their #athletic careers at HF. Tomorrow they lay it all on the track at the @ihsa_il Boys State Final Meet. Last week, our HF Girls Team were Runners Up. This week I’m praying our boys pull out a #team win. 💪🏾 #GoVikings #hfboystrackandfield #tracknation #fieldnation #tracklife #coach #athlete

In March 2017, @pttheshaq introduced @clark_the_shark10 to #shotput and #discus. Brett Young, father of #KDYoung of @gamecockthrows invited her out to a session we had scheduled May 2017 to prepare her for 2017 @usatf Jr. Nationals out in Sacramento. The rest is history.... Thank you to the Mount Pulaski Board Members 🏛for recognizing Cassidy Clark on her recent athletic achievements 🥇🥈at the 2018 #IESA #TrackAndField #StateChampionship Meet. 🔥💣 I absolutely am blessed and honored to be her #coach. These next few years are going to be a blast! It’s a tough pill to swallow knowing that our girls were the 3A State Runners Up last year and again this year. Last year we fell short by 4 pts and this year we fell short by 6 pts. Thank you @ihsa_il for running a wonderful meet and thank you @eiu for being a wonderfully organized host! This summer is about getting faster, stronger and better. I’m grateful for this @hfvikinggirlstf staff, these hard working girls and especially our Athletic Director Dan Vosnos. 💿⚫️🚨STATE CHAMPION ALERT🚨⚫️💿 Congratulations to Cassidy Clark @clark_the_shark10 of Mt. Pulaski Middle School on winning 🥇the #ShotPut for IESA 8th Grade Girls with a PR of 33’7.5” and 🥈placing 2nd in #discus with a throw of 100’3”. Everyone knows the throw events are about inches. Going into the finals for shot put she sat in 2nd place. No one in the finals had improved their distance. 😔Her PR coming into the state meet was 32’11” 👍🏾of which she threw the previous weekend at the sectional meet. In order for her to take 1st place, she needed to throw beyond 33’5”... 6” more from her PR. 🤔 Seeing her launch the shot out there was beautiful. The eruption of her entire family and friends speaks for itself. We knew she had punched a powerful one out there, we just didn’t know how far... 🗣Turn the volume up to hear it all play out!🗣 Thank you to the Clark Family and Friends for such an awesome support base for Cassidy. It’s absolutely amazing and humbling to be her coach. Thank you Coach Johnson of @aretethrowsnation and Coach Angel @coachangeldls for your ongoing support and efforts. #ATNMidwest truly appreciates everything you do for the greater good of this sport and the #throw events! #atn #aretethrowsnation #tcr #throwingchainreaction #trackandfield #tracklife #tracknation #fieldnation #thrownation
The Track Season in Review: 2 weeks left with my @hfvikingsthrows boys. This season has been one to remember! Being a part of both the 2018 HF Boys and HF Girls Track & Field programs has been an honor and learning experience. Both Head Coaches have put in a lot of work preparing their teams for a successful season. State is this week for the girls and next week for the boys. I’m excited to get back to the drawing board for the off season once the season has come to an official end. If they thought weights during the season was tough, it’s about to get a WHOLE LOT MORE FUN! 😏 #GoVikings #HFTrackandField #RedSmoke #HFFamily #HFVikingsThrows #HFThrows #TrackAndField #FieldNation #TrackNation #TrackLife #Blessed
To my beloved athletes: The greatest part about being a #coach is getting to know my athletes and their families. I consider each and every athlete I work with my child. My compassion for each athlete working to better themselves comes from a motherly perspective. Thank you to every athlete I’ve worked with over the near decade I’ve been coaching and personal training! I truly appreciate your time, effort, work ethic and especially your love in return. I’m humbled by the trust and confidence each of you give me. Lord knows I’m grateful for the gift with which He’s blessed me and in return I’m able to share with all you talented throwers. Mālo aupito! Ofa lahi atu, Coach #coach #mother #athletes #thankful #happymothersday #icantfiteveryoneinthispost 🤦🏽‍♀️lol
